On June 14, 2026, British Royal Marine Commandos, supported by National Crime Agency officers, conducted a six-hour boarding operation on the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker Smyrtos (also spelled Smyrtos/Smyros in reports) as it transited the English Channel. The vessel, flying a Cameroon flag and previously sanctioned in July 2025, was fast-roped onto from helicopters including Chinooks in a midnight-to-dawn raid involving HMS Sutherland, HMS Ledbury, an RAF P-8 Poseidon, and additional aircraft.
