Inference Leaves 500 MB Backend Data per 3.97 MB Video Clip, 130x Multiplier Measured

AI inference creates persistent storage footprints 130 times larger than delivered outputs. Survey and forecast data confirm this growth already exceeds training-related demand and alters data-center power profiles. Organizations that continue scoping AI budgets around accelerators alone will face rising energy and capacity costs.

Western Digital internal tests show inference workloads retain 130 times the visible output volume. McKinsey forecasts inference demand growing at 35 percent CAGR through 2030, outpacing training at 22 percent and accounting for over 40 percent of data-center capacity by decade end. IDC survey of 763 decision makers records 95 percent seeing data-volume growth from generative AI, with 61 percent reporting at least 25 percent annual increase. Storage therefore shifts from periodic archive to continuously accessed input for RAG and model retraining.

Retained inference artifacts—prompt logs, intermediate tensors, synthetic outputs—accumulate without the natural decay seen in training runs. Ninety-six percent of surveyed organizations now expect faster archive retrieval to support ongoing inference. HDDs supply the required capacity at lower cost per terabyte while flash handles hot working sets; mismatch between these tiers directly extends GPU idle time and raises power draw per completed request.

Energy cost of storing and re-reading the 130x multiplier compounds data-center electricity demand. Each additional retained terabyte requires sustained rack power and cooling regardless of whether GPUs are active. Budget models that isolate accelerator spend therefore understate total operational load once inference traffic scales.

Enterprises must reallocate capital from GPU-only line items to tiered storage pipelines that keep data accessible at inference latency targets. Failure to do so converts storage growth into measurable GPU under-utilization and higher kilowatt-hours per token served.

⚡ Prediction

Western Digital: Enterprise HDD exabytes shipped for AI inference workloads will surpass 1,200 EB cumulative by end of 2028.
