Smart Cart Camera Mount Enables Precise Measurement of Liquid Tilt in Ramp-Accelerated Tank

Marasco's preprint upgrades an accelerated-frame demo by adding onboard video and quantified acceleration on a Smart Cart. Evidence shows surface tilt matches ramp angle as predicted. Key limitation is lack of controlled student learning outcome data; stronger evidence would require randomized classroom trials measuring conceptual change.

The setup improves on prior demonstrations by Bartlett, Duzen, and Munera, which relied on external lab-frame video that obscured tank-frame effects. Mounting the camera to the cart itself, following Krulj and Slisko, lets observers see the surface remain parallel to the ramp from the accelerating frame. The Smart Cart sensor logs instantaneous acceleration, replacing estimates used in earlier work and allowing quantitative comparison between observed tilt and g sin theta predictions.

This matters for physics education because students can now directly experience and measure the fictitious force that tilts the surface without needing to mentally transform frames. The method also bridges the ramp case to the hanging-mass cart, showing both produce identical surface angles when acceleration matches. Limitations include frictionless ramp assumptions and small sample sizes of trials, typical of classroom-scale apparatus rather than controlled lab replication.

Future adoption could standardize this in labs if departments already own Smart Carts, lowering barriers compared to custom rigs. The paper does not address scaling to non-ideal fluids or curved surfaces, leaving room for extensions that test student conceptual gains via pre-post testing.

⚡ Prediction

Marasco: By October 2027, at least three AAPT regional meetings will feature live Smart Cart tank demos with published acceleration data, if arXiv downloads exceed 1,000.
