SpecEvo arXiv:2610.28706 cuts frontier LLM costs 80% on 176 discovery tasks
SpecEvo demonstrates that routing routine exploration to lightweight models and strategic synthesis to frontier models yields cost-efficient scientific discovery. Results on 176 tasks show 80 percent API savings with no performance regression. The approach generalizes patterns from earlier LLM search systems into a persistent evidence-consolidation loop.
The framework runs parallel lightweight models to generate and refine candidate programs while an Advisor continually distills successes, failures, and saturated directions into persistent guidance. At stagnation checkpoints a frontier model performs synthesis or reframing. This speculate-then-consolidate pattern delegates routine search to cheap models and reserves expensive reasoning for high-leverage moves whose value compounds over subsequent low-cost evaluations.
On equation discovery SpecEvo delivered 1.5 times greater evaluation efficiency than prior cost-efficient baselines and improved 3.8 percent over the strongest CO-Bench entry. The 80 percent cost reduction held while performance matched or surpassed frontier-only runs, indicating that trajectory-conditioned coordination extracts more signal per dollar than uniform frontier sampling.
Related work on LLM-driven program search (FunSearch, 2023) and multi-agent consolidation (CAMEL, 2023) showed similar efficiency gains when evidence from failed trials was reused; SpecEvo operationalizes that reuse at scale. Operationally the result implies discovery pipelines can shift from single-model budgets to hybrid fleets without accuracy loss.
Next deployments will test whether the same consolidation logic transfers to wet-lab protocol design and materials simulation loops where evaluation latency is higher.
SpecEvo: Hybrid LLM fleets will appear in at least three public equation-discovery leaderboards by October 2027.
