The cross-sectional study, published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology, relied on self-reported 24-hour product inventories and social media habits. The study missed measuring actual chemical concentrations or longitudinal behavior change, limiting causal inference. Few students checked labels or used screening apps, suggesting knowledge gaps persist despite stated concerns.
Regulatory scrutiny of fragrance ingredients remains limited, and social platforms continue to monetize beauty tutorials without exposure warnings. Future work requires repeated biomarker sampling in larger, diverse cohorts to test whether reduced influencer engagement lowers internal dose over six to twelve months.
