US Retail Sales Drop 0.6% MoM in July as Control Group Falls 0.4%

July US retail sales fell more than expected after promotion timing shifts and post-World Cup effects. Lower-income spending now leads while the GDP control group signals downside risk to growth. Data point to a narrowing but still fragile consumption base ahead of the next policy decision.

Commerce Department figures confirmed a broad July contraction in retail activity. Nonstore retailers posted their second-largest monthly decline since 2020 after Prime Day promotions shifted into June. Clothing, furniture, and gasoline station categories also contracted, while unadjusted series showed modest gains. Bank of America card data aligned with the official print and highlighted weaker online spending.

The calendar shift of major promotions, combined with the post-World Cup spending pause and early-July heat, produced the observed weakness. UBS analysts flagged the fading boost from 2025 tax refunds under the OBBBA as an additional drag. Real retail sales, adjusted for CPI, remained positive year-over-year but decelerated sharply, indicating consumption momentum had already peaked.

Lower-income household card spending outpaced higher-income cohorts across discretionary categories for four consecutive weeks through early August. This reversal of prior K-shaped patterns suggests the post-pandemic bifurcation in consumption is narrowing as higher-income restraint offsets lower-income resilience.

The control-group decline feeds directly into third-quarter GDP estimates. Markets will watch the August release for confirmation of whether the July drop was a one-off calendar artifact or the start of sustained softening in consumer outlays.

⚡ Prediction

Census Bureau: August retail sales will register between -0.1% and +0.2% MoM on the September 15 release.
