arXiv:2610.20782 Derives Three Requirements for Open-World Versatility

The analysis identifies inference-time learning plus two representation constraints as necessary for open-world operation. Evidence from 8B-scale models shows performance divergence based on whether these properties hold. The work connects directly to autonomous system requirements where tasks cannot be enumerated in advance.

Operationally the findings imply training pipelines must enforce disentanglement and retain surplus representational capacity even when iid generalization appears sufficient. Deployment records in robotics and adaptive control show similar degradation when models encounter novel task groupings without inner-loop mechanisms. Future systems will need explicit consistency checks on the inner learner across task sequences.

⚡ Prediction

Zhang et al.: Models satisfying all three requirements will maintain positive accuracy slope on accumulating related-task sequences above 10B parameters within 18 months.
