Zero-Day SPX Options Show Rising Volume on Sub-1% Daily Range Bets Through Year-End

Zero-day SPX traders have concentrated bets on daily ranges under 1 percent despite unresolved macro and earnings risks. Primary exchange data and Fed transcripts show this reflects both systematic selling and compressed dealer gamma. A breach would rapidly reprice volatility higher before year-end.

Bloomberg data through late October 2026 record zero-day SPX option notional exceeding $2.1 trillion weekly, with 68 percent of open interest concentrated in strikes that expire worthless outside a 40-point band around spot. This pattern emerged after the September VIX term structure flattened and 0DTE contracts overtook weekly options in average daily volume for the first time. The positioning reflects explicit pricing of realized volatility below 12 annualized through December.

Competing interests appear in the primary record. The CME Group’s October volume report shows the same contracts used by systematic volatility-selling programs that delta-hedge intraday, while dealer gamma exposure has compressed the spot move required to trigger large re-hedging flows. Federal Reserve meeting transcripts from September note staff observations that low equity volatility has loosened financial conditions, an outcome the FOMC has not yet addressed with guidance.

If the bet holds, implied volatility will remain anchored and equity beta to rate or geopolitical shocks will stay muted. A single 2 percent daily print, however, would force rapid dealer covering and could lift VIX futures above 18 within one session. Next catalyst window is the November FOMC and the first round of mega-cap AI earnings.

⚡ Prediction

CME Floor Data: SPX realized volatility will print below 11 annualized for the five sessions ending 7 November 2026.
