uBlock Origin MV2 rules block JW Platform and Connatix scripts on TechCrunch

Custom uBlock Origin filters neutralize TechCrunch autoplay by blocking JW Player and Connatix scripts at load time. The approach demonstrates the difference between cosmetic hiding and request blocking for background media. Maintenance cost rises when publishers swap video providers.

The posted filters combine request blocking and element hiding. Three network rules prevent script fetches from JW Player CDNs and the Connatix third-party domain. Two cosmetic rules then remove the empty embed containers that remain after script blocking. These entries are written for the full Manifest V2 build of uBlock Origin on Firefox; uBO Lite lacks the required network-filter surface.

Autoplay video on news sites typically loads 2-4 external scripts that continue execution even when visually hidden. The listed domains match patterns observed in prior JW Player and Connatix deployments across multiple Conde Nast properties. Blocking at the script stage eliminates both the visible player and the audio stream, a result that element hiding alone cannot achieve.

Publishers rotate video vendors every 6-18 months. Cosmetic rules will continue to mask placeholder divs, yet new network rules will be required each time the embed host changes. Similar script-blocking patterns already appear in community lists for other sites using JW Player or Outbrain video units.

No public telemetry yet quantifies how many TechCrunch readers apply these filters. The rules remain effective only while the current embed stack persists.
