Stripe Nears $7B Acquisition of OpenRouter for AI Routing Infrastructure

Stripe agreed to purchase OpenRouter, the API aggregation platform routing requests across 100+ model providers, in a transaction exceeding $7 billion. The deal integrates OpenRouter's routing engine and usage telemetry directly into Stripe's billing and fraud systems. OpenRouter processed 1.2 billion requests in July 2026 across 40,000 developers, with 68 percent of traffic flowing through Anthropic, OpenAI, and Grok endpoints.

Internal Stripe metrics show AI-related payment volume grew 340 percent year-over-year through Q2 2026, concentrated in per-token billing and usage-based invoicing. OpenRouter's existing settlement layer already handles $180 million in annualized API spend. Integration will embed model selection logic inside Stripe's Radar fraud model, allowing real-time routing decisions that factor in cost, latency, and chargeback risk.

The transaction extends Stripe's pattern of acquiring infrastructure that converts usage into recurring revenue, following the 2024 acquisition of Lemon Squeezy. Competitors including Adyen and Checkout.com lack comparable model-routing data, creating a measurable gap in AI-native payment primitives. Post-close, Stripe plans to expose OpenRouter's routing API as a first-party product with settlement handled natively.

Regulatory filings are expected within 90 days; the deal is structured as a cash-and-stock transaction with standard earn-outs tied to 2027 request volume targets.
