Beaver dam analogs produced a 4.75-fold increase in coho survival through measurable changes in flow and temperature. Data from USGS PIT arrays and prior peer-reviewed studies converge on the same hydraulic driver. Regulatory and fabrication bottlenecks now limit wider deployment.

Engineers installed 87 beaver dam analogs between 2021 and 2024 in the Chehalis and Snohomish basins using wood and gravel structures that mimic natural dams. USGS PIT-tag arrays recorded 2,148 tagged fish; apparent survival through summer low-flow periods rose from a baseline of 0.12 to 0.57 at treated sites while untreated controls remained at 0.14. Flow velocity dropped 38 percent and pool depth increased 0.4 m on average, directly reducing thermal stress and predation exposure.

The intervention addresses a documented bottleneck where juvenile coho mortality exceeds 85 percent during drought years. Parallel work in Oregon’s Smith River showed similar 2.8-fold gains when dam density reached three structures per kilometer. Both datasets align with earlier findings in the 2018 Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences paper on natural beaver ponds, confirming the mechanism is hydraulic rather than chemical.

Operational scaling requires permitting reform; current Section 404 reviews average 14 months per mile of stream. The next phase tests prefabricated modular units that reduce installation time from 11 days to 2 days per structure while maintaining the same survival benefit.

State agencies plan 240 additional structures in 2025; if density targets are met, modeled basin-wide smolt output increases 19 percent by 2028.
