Shatilov Flags Unjustified Bending Radius Approximation in 2021 Beamstrahlung Analysis
Shatilov identifies a fundamental approximation error in prior beamstrahlung calculations that invalidates equilibrium parameter predictions for high-energy e+e- rings. The simpler alternative he offers aligns better with numerical tracking and carries immediate consequences for luminosity optimization at future circular colliders.
Shatilov shows the 2021 derivation treats the electromagnetic field of the opposing bunch as producing a fixed bending radius throughout the collision. This assumption collapses under the rapidly varying fields at nanometer-scale beam sizes typical of modern designs, breaking the analytical expressions for equilibrium emittance and energy spread.
The comment replaces the flawed step with a direct integration over the actual field profile along the bunch trajectory. This yields closed-form results that match existing beam-beam simulation codes within a few percent while eliminating the need for the original iterative procedure.
The error matters for next-generation colliders such as FCC-ee and CEPC, where beamstrahlung-driven blow-up sets the luminosity limit. An overstated blow-up margin could lead to overly conservative bunch charges or incorrect optics choices, directly affecting projected performance.
Independent tracking studies using the proposed solution are expected within two years; confirmation would require updating design reports and simulation benchmarks used by the collider community.
Shatilov: Full 3D beam-beam simulations will match the revised analytical formulae to within 5% for FCC-ee parameters by end of 2028.
