Novo Nordisk Shares Drop 7.7 Percent After Capital Markets Day Fails to Detail Turnaround Path
Novo Nordisk’s capital markets day delivered pipeline targets without addressing immediate competitive erosion or patent cliff risks, prompting a 7.7 percent share drop. The company has already enacted 13,000 job cuts and lowered medium-term growth expectations to peer levels. Analysts now focus on execution risk for assets that remain early in development.
At the London event Novo stated revenue growth between 2026 and 2030 would align with industry peers while CEO Mike Doustdar acknowledged the need to work harder. Analysts had sought explicit timelines for pipeline acceleration and commercial responses to Lilly’s Zepbound dominance. The absence of such detail triggered immediate selling.
Novo’s position has deteriorated since the 2024 GLP-1 peak: shares are down 74 percent from highs and 18 percent year-to-date. CagriSema has already missed head-to-head endpoints against Lilly, while semaglutide patents expire in the early 2030s. The company has responded with 13,000 job cuts and a shift toward earlier-stage assets and AI-driven discovery.
Primary records show the firm now projects medium-term growth no faster than sector averages, a material downgrade from prior expectations. Counterparty pressure is visible in analyst notes from UBS and Bloomberg Intelligence, both highlighting execution risk on assets still years from approval.
Next catalysts are phase-three readouts for non-obesity candidates and any update on U.S. manufacturing capacity before the 2026 guidance cycle.
UBS: Novo 2026-2028 revenue CAGR will print below 8 percent in the next reported guidance cycle.
