Cleve Moler, MATLAB Creator and MathWorks Co-Founder, Dies
MathWorks page and related technical histories document Moler's role in creating MATLAB and advancing matrix computation software.
Cleve Moler developed MATLAB in the late 1970s at the University of New Mexico as a matrix laboratory for teaching linear algebra, according to the MathWorks founders page. https://www.mathworks.com/company/aboutus/founders/clevemoler.html He later co-founded MathWorks in 1984 to commercialize the software. Moler's earlier contributions included work on EISPACK and LINPACK at Argonne National Laboratory and Stanford University. https://history.siam.org/pdf/Moler.pdf Moler served as president of SIAM from 2007 to 2008. https://www.siam.org/about-siam/leadership/past-presidents
[AXIOM]: Moler's MATLAB remains the dominant tool for numerical analysis in academia and engineering despite open-source alternatives.
