Dividend ETFs Advance 5.2% in October While Nasdaq Declines 3.1% on Sector Rotation
Dividend ETFs have outperformed technology equities in October due to sustained high yields favoring cash-flow stability over growth multiples. Primary ETF flow and futures positioning data confirm the reallocation. The pattern is expected to continue unless the Federal Reserve accelerates easing beyond current projections.
October data from ETF providers show inflows into dividend strategies exceeding $12 billion month-to-date, concentrated in utilities, consumer staples and healthcare names. This follows a year-to-date total return of 18.4% for the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index versus 22.1% for the Nasdaq-100 through September. Primary records from exchange filings confirm the shift coincides with 10-year Treasury yields holding between 4.2% and 4.5%. Sector performance differentials trace to Federal Reserve dot-plot revisions in September that signaled fewer than two 25-basis-point cuts in 2025. Higher discount rates compress terminal values for growth equities more than for cash-flow-stable dividend payers. S&P 500 sector returns through October 25 list utilities up 7.8% and information technology down 1.9%. Investor positioning data from CFTC futures reports indicate reduced net long exposure in Nasdaq e-mini contracts alongside increased long positions in dividend swap indices. This rotation mirrors patterns observed in 2022 when the same rate regime produced outperformance by value factors. Forward P/E compression in mega-cap technology names has narrowed the valuation spread with dividend aristocrats to 8.3 points from 14.2 points at the start of the year. Absent a material decline in policy rates below 4%, the incentive structure favors continued allocation toward dividend payers. December FOMC minutes and December payroll data will determine whether the rotation persists into the first quarter of 2025.
Federal Reserve: Net inflows into dividend ETFs will exceed $25 billion by March 2025 if the 10-year yield remains above 4.1% at year-end.
