Cross-Sectional Study of 300 Inpatients Associates Physical Neglect With Repeated Suicide Attempts
Observational inpatient data strengthen the case for including neglect in suicide-risk assessment yet highlight the absence of longitudinal mediation studies and population controls. Protective factors such as adult social support were noted but not quantified.
Semmelweis University researchers administered the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire to inpatients and compared single versus multiple attempters. Physical neglect showed a dose-response link to repetition after adjustment for other trauma subtypes; 90% of the sample reported at least two trauma categories, confirming high co-occurrence. The design precludes causal inference and cannot be extrapolated beyond inpatient settings. Prior ACE cohort studies (Felitti 1998, CDC) documented similar graded relationships yet relied on retrospective self-report; prospective birth-cohort data remain sparse.
Longitudinal cohort study: By 2028, at least two European birth cohorts will report hazard ratios for neglect predicting incident attempts after controlling for abuse and adult psychiatric disorders.
