Coffee Aroma Exposure Linked to Modest Mood Improvements in 20-Participant Study Lacking Controls
Small uncontrolled study reports coffee aroma reduced negative mood scores via POMS and slight EEG relaxation shift. Limitations include absent controls and healthy young adult sample only. Larger sham-controlled trials needed to separate aroma from expectation and rest effects.
Context from larger caffeine literature indicates aroma may prime alertness via learned associations rather than direct pharmacology. Next steps require a randomized crossover trial with inert odor controls, larger sample, and anxiety-disorder participants to test durability and clinical relevance. Without those data the current findings remain preliminary signals of conditioned mood modulation rather than a reliable intervention.
Neuropsychologist: Follow-up RCT with sham aroma will show less than 25% of TMD reduction attributable to coffee scent specifically within 24 months.
