Researchers from the Croatian Conservation Institute and Aix-Marseille University examined ten coating samples from the 2016 discovery using mass spectrometry and pollen profiling. Every sample contained heated coniferous resin, while one revealed beeswax addition that increases flexibility and workability when applied hot. Pollen trapped in the pitch mapped Mediterranean oak-pine forests, riverine alder-ash stands, and nearby Istrian-Dalmatian mountain beech-fir zones, indicating local production or repairs along the northeastern Adriatic coast.

The study fills a documented gap in organic material research that has long favored hull timbers over sealants. It also aligns with earlier Greek textual references to zopissa while providing the first direct chemical confirmation on an Adriatic vessel. This points to specialized regional traditions rather than uniform Roman practice, echoing patterns seen in the slightly later Madrague de Giens wreck where similar mixed coatings appear.

Future work should target additional wrecks in the same waters to test whether zopissa use tracks specific shipyards or repair hubs. Expanded sample sets and radiocarbon dating of the pitch itself would tighten the chronology of application events and clarify how often vessels were recoated during their service life.

Modern bio-based marine coatings could draw directly from these formulations, particularly the wax-resin blend for flexible, low-toxicity protection in variable salinity environments.
