The African Centers for Lightning and Education Network compiled reports from 2018 through mid-2026, capturing incidents often missed due to language barriers, limited internet, and cultural attributions to supernatural causes. Researchers calculated country-level risk scores using lightning frequency from meteorological data, injury and death rates relative to population, and GDP per capita as a vulnerability proxy. Central African nations near the Congo Basin showed the highest combined scores because intense year-round thunderstorms coincide with outdoor agricultural work and limited access to safe shelters or medical care.

Mass-casualty events stand out in the data: 87 percent of African lightning fatality incidents involved multiple victims, compared with fewer than 10 percent in high-income countries. This pattern reflects group exposure during farming, herding, or school commutes rather than isolated strikes. South Africa remains the sole exception among the 15 countries analyzed, owing to stronger reporting systems, English-language media coverage, and established lightning safety research that has driven modest reductions in vulnerability.

Global mortality estimates of 6,000 to 24,000 deaths annually remain imprecise because underreporting is greatest precisely where risk is highest. Next steps require standardized, multilingual surveillance systems and targeted interventions such as lightning-safe school buildings and early-warning dissemination in high-exposure rural zones. Without these, the disparity between lightning frequency and documented outcomes will persist.
