The study used a novel segregation-derived exposure metric on nationwide 100 m grid data covering all Dutch residents rather than survey panels. At high exposure, income inequality and relative deprivation moderated the relationship, consistent with contact theory under stable conditions and threat amplification during rapid demographic shifts.

The main limitation is reliance on aggregate election data without individual-level controls for selective mobility or media exposure. Policymakers should monitor influx rates alongside inequality metrics rather than absolute exposure alone when designing integration programs.

Future work could test whether targeted local investment in high-exposure, high-inequality municipalities attenuates the observed vote reversal in the 2027 election cycle.
