Korean Survey Finds Postmenopausal Women with Type 2 Diabetes Report 54% Higher Menopause Symptom Severity

Cross-sectional data link type 2 diabetes to intensified physical menopause symptoms in postmenopausal women, consistent with bidirectional metabolic-hormonal pathways identified in prior cohorts. The association is limited to physical rather than mood domains and does not establish causation. Larger longitudinal studies with objective glycemic and symptom measures are required to test whether improved glucose control alters symptom trajectories.

Researchers at Eulji University and Asan Medical Center administered symptom questionnaires to 220 women with diabetes or prediabetes and 76 controls, excluding hormone therapy users and those with diagnosed depression or sleep disorders. Physical symptoms including hot flashes and joint pain scored 46% higher in the diabetes group overall, while mood symptoms showed no difference; the gap appeared only after menopause. The design was observational and relied on self-report, so it cannot distinguish whether hyperglycemia amplifies vasomotor instability or whether shared factors such as central adiposity drive both.

⚡ Prediction

Endocrinology societies: Within 24 months, at least two prospective cohorts will report whether HbA1c reduction of 1% or more correlates with a 15% drop in hot-flash frequency among postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes.
