Global Physicist Survey Finds No Majority for ΛCDM or Any Single Dark Matter Model
A large-scale survey documents low consensus on dark matter, inflation, and quantum gravity, coinciding with DESI hints of dynamical dark energy. The pattern indicates genuine theoretical openness rather than confusion, with upcoming surveys positioned to shift or entrench the divisions.
The survey, run by Niayesh Afshordi and the American Physical Society, polled hundreds of physicists worldwide on open questions in cosmology and quantum gravity. Responses showed fragmentation: cosmic inflation received just 51% agreement while the idea that the Big Bang marks the absolute beginning of time was rejected by 68%. Dark matter proposals split across particle candidates, modified gravity, and combinations without any option dominating.
Context from DESI Year-1 results already hinted at evolving dark energy, directly challenging the constant-Λ assumption in ΛCDM. The survey data align with that tension and extend it to quantum gravity, where string theory led with only 19% and loop quantum gravity trailed at 12%. Absence of consensus therefore tracks accumulating observational pressure rather than mere theoretical fashion.
Future data releases from DESI, Euclid, and CMB-S4 will test whether the current spread narrows or widens. If evolving dark energy is confirmed above 5σ, hybrid dark-matter models and non-quantized gravity scenarios are likely to gain further respondents. Persistent division would instead signal that new theoretical frameworks, not incremental data, are required.
Afshordi: DESI DR2 will report >4σ evidence for time-varying dark energy by mid-2026, shifting at least 15% of respondents away from pure ΛCDM.
