US Rare Earth Output Routes to Asia as Domestic Magnet Capacity Stays Below 1,000 Tonnes

US rare earth miners continue exporting to Asia because domestic magnet production capacity has not scaled with mine output. Government funding has advanced oxide and metal stages but left the final magnet step dependent on Korean and Japanese lines. This maintains supply-chain exposure for EVs, defense systems, and data-center hardware.

MP Materials halted Shenghe shipments after signing its US government offtake agreement but redirected material to an unnamed US customer and Asian buyers. Energy Fuels confirmed near-term oxide shipments to South Korea while acquiring Australian Strategic Materials’ Korean metal plant and announcing the $1.9 billion VAC magnet acquisition. Both firms cited slow domestic magnet demand as the driver. US NdFeB magnet production remains under 1,000 tonnes annually versus Japan’s 10,000–15,000 tonnes and South Korea’s 2,000–3,000 tonnes. MP plans GM magnet deliveries in 2026 and Apple supply later; Energy Fuels expects VAC US lines to absorb more output only after 2027 scale-up. Government funding covers oxide and metal stages but leaves alloy-to-magnet conversion dependent on Asian capacity. The gap leaves AI server HDD motors, EV traction motors, and defense actuators exposed to the same Asian choke points targeted by IRA and DPA funding. No US facility yet integrates mine-to-magnet at commercial volume, so export dependence persists even as nominal domestic production rises. MP and Energy Fuels both forecast internal magnet consumption rising after 2027, yet current contracts and Korean acquisitions indicate continued Asian routing through at least 2028 absent new domestic alloy capacity.

⚡ Prediction

MP Materials: commercial NdFeB magnet shipments to GM exceed 200 tonnes cumulative by Q4 2027.
