John Williams Delivers 100GB+ Encrypted Militia Documents to ProPublica After 2+ Years Undercover

A civilian spent two years inside Oath Keepers and allied groups, reaching leadership positions and exfiltrating over 100 GB of recordings and files. The material reveals internal structure and external contacts but was gathered without official oversight. Its release adds primary records to existing Jan. 6 case files while exposing operational limits of solo surveillance.

Williams began infiltration after January 6, 2021, without law enforcement coordination. He recorded conversations, copied documents during overnight stays, and disrupted surveillance of a journalist. He fled his Salt Lake City apartment on April 1, 2023, after fearing exposure, carrying a go-bag with thumb drives holding more than 100 gigabytes of encrypted files.

The documents include recordings of militia members discussing ties to law enforcement officials and new leadership structures involving professionals. ProPublica received the materials via anonymous mail; no FBI or police involvement is documented in the released material. This differs from prior cases such as the 2022 Rhodes seditious conspiracy trial, where evidence came from official intercepts rather than a single freelance source.

Operationally, the case shows low coordination between civilian actors and federal agencies increases detection risk for the infiltrator while limiting prosecutorial utility of the data. Militia groups have adapted by vetting members more stringently since 2021 indictments, per court records. Future releases may surface additional internal rosters but lack chain-of-custody verification required for direct legal use.

No further public drops from the same cache have occurred as of the reporting date.

⚡ Prediction

Williams: No additional verified document releases from the same cache will appear within 12 months due to ongoing personal security constraints.
