Monte Carlo and experimental validation confirm 4pi polyethylene neutron detector efficiency to 3% accuracy below 6 MeV
Peer-reviewed methods paper reports MCNP6-experiment agreement to 3% for a polyethylene-moderated 4pi neutron detector below 6 MeV. Legendre decomposition enables single-run angular efficiency extraction. Limited to energies under 6 MeV and untested on alternative detector designs.
Future work could benchmark the parametrization against time-of-flight data at facilities such as n_TOF or LANSCE. Adoption would improve systematic uncertainties in experiments measuring (n,gamma) or (n,fission) reactions where beam angular distribution varies. No immediate applications to radiation monitoring or security screening are demonstrated.
