TGA Allows Non-Psychiatrists to Supervise MDMA and Psilocybin Sessions Despite Sparse Phase 3 Data
Australia has loosened psychedelic therapy rules amid weak RCT evidence and rising mental health demand. The move risks under-scrutinized expansion of experimental treatments without standard regulatory thresholds for safety or dosing. Observational data and small trials leave key questions about long-term harms unanswered.
The July 2026 policy change permits clinical psychologists, nurses, or occupational therapists to manage sessions once the authorized psychiatrist has administered the drug, while still requiring a second staff member. This follows 2023 authorization under the Authorized Prescriber Scheme after public lobbying but limited expert consultation. No new randomized controlled trials with adequate sample sizes or long-term follow-up supported the relaxation.
TGA: Adverse event reports linked to psychedelic-assisted therapy will surpass 75 cases by December 2027, triggering a formal safety review.
