Mouse Model Shows Post-TBI Bladder Infection Amplifies Spatial Memory Loss via Neuroimmune Shifts
A controlled mouse experiment demonstrates that a common post-TBI bladder infection markedly worsens spatial memory deficits through amplified neuroinflammation. The findings provide mechanistic support for clinical reports linking UTIs to cognitive setbacks in brain-injury survivors and identify IL-6 dynamics and bladder immune changes as targets for further study.
The study also detected increased bladder immune cells after TBI alone, suggesting injury-induced susceptibility that could explain higher infection rates. Next steps include mapping vagal or humoral brain-bladder signaling pathways and testing whether early UTI prophylaxis alters long-term cognitive trajectories in larger cohorts. Human translation will require prospective observational studies that track both infection timing and serial cognitive scores.
Kokiko-Cochran lab: Within 24 months a prospective human cohort will report that documented post-TBI UTI doubles the odds of persistent cognitive decline at 12 months versus matched controls without infection.
