Ovulatory Cycle Tied to Visible Luxury Preference in Three Observational Studies

Three observational studies link higher fertility to greater desire for publicly visible luxury goods, consistent with a possible mate-attraction function. Effects were specific to conspicuous items and vanished when participants learned men do not notice such signals. All findings are correlational and require within-subject hormone-confirmed replication.

Researchers measured hormone levels via urine or cycle-phase estimates in 70 students who drew luxury logos larger near ovulation, then surveyed 1,486 women on purchase intent and 966 on gift-certificate choice. Ovulating participants favored public luxury items and larger logos but showed no shift for private goods; the preference disappeared when participants were told men ignore designer labels. These patterns held after excluding hormonal-contraceptive users.

The design is cross-sectional and correlational, so it cannot establish that estrogen causes the shift or rule out demand characteristics in self-reported intentions. No base rates for actual luxury purchases were reported, and effect sizes were not quantified beyond directional changes. Related work in Evolution and Human Behavior has shown mixed results on ovulatory shifts in mating-related behaviors, underscoring the need for preregistered replications.

Next steps require longitudinal within-woman tracking with daily hormone assays and behavioral measures of actual spending rather than stated preference. Without those data, claims that fertility drives luxury consumption remain preliminary associations limited to visible signaling contexts.
