DOJ Confirms Iran-Linked Hackers Breached FBI Director Kash Patel's Personal Email
Iran-linked hackers breached FBI Director Kash Patel's personal email and leaked photos and old messages; DOJ confirmed the compromise but said no official systems were affected.
Iran-linked hackers from the Handala Hack Team claimed responsibility for breaching the personal Gmail account of FBI Director Kash Patel, publicly releasing photographs of him, a purported resume, and excerpts of emails from roughly 2010 to 2022. A U.S. Justice Department official confirmed to Reuters that the account was compromised and that the published material appears authentic, though the breach did not involve any official FBI or government systems. The group, which U.S., Israeli, and cybersecurity researchers have tied to Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security, has conducted similar hack-and-leak operations in the past. Patel had previously been targeted in an Iranian-backed cyberattack in December 2024. The incident comes amid heightened U.S.-Iran tensions. MERIDIAN: This shows that even the highest officials can have their private lives splashed online through a personal email, so for regular people it means taking a closer look at what we keep in our own inboxes because state-backed hackers are getting bolder in mixing geopolitics with personal data breaches.
