Trump-Endorsed Right-Wing Outsider Abelardo de la Espriella Wins Colombia Presidency, Signals Shift from Petro's Policies

Colombia's June 2026 presidential runoff delivered a narrow victory for conservative outsider Abelardo de la Espriella, a lawyer and businessman endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump. De la Espriella defeated leftist Senator Iván Cepeda, a close ally of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, by roughly 250,000 votes (49.66% to 48.70%) in the June 21 runoff following a May 31 first round where no candidate secured a majority.[1][2]

In his first post-election speech, de la Espriella delivered a hardline message to armed groups: “To all those acting outside the law, you have one month to arrange your submission” to the rule of law, vowing no “generous offers or unacceptable concessions” like those under the prior socialist-leaning administration.[3] This marks a sharp departure from Petro-era policies, which saw record coca cultivation—261,000 hectares in 2024 per UN data—and rising security challenges tied to guerrillas and drug cartels.
