Meta smart glasses recorded non-consensual video at Delhi protest reaching millions of views
Non-consensual smart-glasses footage triggered targeted harassment and coincided with police adoption of the same devices. Market data and documented LED bypasses show rapid scaling without consent safeguards. The pattern shifts privacy risk onto individuals while state actors gain surveillance tools.
Shubnam, a graphic designer, was approached at the protest by a content creator using Meta glasses styled as ordinary Wayfarers. The unconsented clip was edited into a rage-bait reel and distributed across Instagram, X, and YouTube. Shubnam reported the incident reversed two decades of personal progress and restricted their public attire choices permanently.
International Data Corporation data show smart glasses as the fastest-growing segment in India’s wearables market. Reliance Jio announced a sub-$105 model launch for later this year. Delhi police simultaneously adopted the same Meta devices for real-time identification during June education protests, confirming operational deployment of identical hardware for surveillance.
Wired documented physical modifications that disable the recording LED on Meta glasses as early as March. Oxford Saïd researcher Janusz Świerczyński notes the resulting expectation that bystanders must detect covert capture. Women and marginalized groups bear disproportionate downstream harms when footage circulates without consent.
Police procurement records and Jio’s planned volume pricing indicate continued expansion of inconspicuous recording capacity before any statutory limits on bystander notification or data retention are enacted.
