WHO Declares MV Hondius Hantavirus Outbreak Over After Three Deaths
WHO ended the MV Hondius hantavirus alert after three fatalities traced to ship ventilation rodents. The event highlights persistent gaps in maritime pest control and has already altered Antarctic cruise demand. Future studies must quantify how ventilation upgrades affect attack rates.
Next steps include a planned case-control study by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to quantify ventilation-related risk factors, with results expected within nine months. Ongoing environmental surveillance on similar vessels will determine whether regulatory changes reduce future incidence below one case per 10,000 passenger-days.
ECDC: The planned case-control study will report a statistically significant association between cabin ventilation filter changes and reduced hantavirus seroconversion by April 2027.
