Life Biosciences Reports Early Glaucoma Data From Cellular Reprogramming Candidate
Life Biosciences shared preliminary open-label data on its OSK-based reprogramming therapy in glaucoma patients. Modest IOP and visual field signals were observed but lack controls and functional confirmation. Larger RCTs are required to establish clinical relevance.
The company presented interim findings from an open-label study in patients with advanced glaucoma. The therapy uses OSK factors delivered via AAV to induce limited cellular rejuvenation in retinal ganglion cells. Treated eyes demonstrated a mean 2.8 mmHg IOP drop at 6 months alongside stabilization of visual field mean deviation in 7 of 12 participants, though no sham-controlled arm was included.
Related work in Nature (2023) demonstrated OSK-mediated axon regeneration in aged mouse optic nerve models, while a separate JAMA Ophthalmology observational series linked similar transcriptional shifts to slower progression in human glaucoma. STAT coverage omitted discussion of delivery immunogenicity risks and the absence of functional electroretinography endpoints that would strengthen claims of ganglion cell rescue.
These data remain early-stage and hypothesis-generating. Larger randomized trials must confirm whether observed changes exceed natural history variability and whether benefit persists beyond one year without oncogenic off-target effects. Regulatory clarity on AAV redosing will also determine development timelines.
Life Biosciences: Phase 2 randomized trial will enroll 80 patients and report visual field stability rates above 60% at 12 months by Q4 2027.
