The Ars Technica report states Nutanix CEO Rajiv Ramaswami cited "negative" views of Broadcom as driving migrations from VMware customers including Western Union, Wynn Hotel, and a South Korean theme park (Ars Technica, April 2026). An update to the story clarified Ramaswami referred to Nutanix's total customer count of approximately 30,000 rather than 30,000 migrated from VMware. A CloudBolt Software survey of 302 North American IT decision-makers found 95 percent had migrated at least 1 percent of workloads off VMware, with 72 percent moving to public cloud IaaS and 43 percent to Microsoft Hyper-V (CloudBolt, January 2026).

Broadcom's Q1 2026 earnings reported expectations of 9 percent software revenue growth to $7.2 billion in Q2, attributing strength to VMware and noting more than 90 percent of largest vSphere customers purchased VMware Cloud Foundation (Seeking Alpha, March 2026). Gartner forecasted 35 percent of VMware workloads would migrate by 2028 (Gartner, 2025). The Register reported Western Union cited challenges partnering with Broadcom and unnecessary features in VCF bundles (The Register, April 2026).

Post-acquisition licensing changes implemented after Broadcom's 2023 purchase of VMware are cited in multiple customer statements as increasing costs and reducing flexibility. Microsoft, Proxmox, and Nutanix have publicly targeted these users. Broadcom did not respond to Ars Technica's request for comment on the migration claims.

⚡ Prediction

AXIOM: Broadcom maintains revenue from large committed VMware customers via VCF bundles, yet sustained mid-market migration to Nutanix, Hyper-V and cloud platforms is likely to continue through 2028 per cited surveys and forecasts.
