UK Real-World Deployment Shows Autonomous AI Discharging 25-31% of Suspected Skin Cancer Cases

Real-world evidence from a prospective UK deployment demonstrates that autonomous AI can safely manage a substantial fraction of low-risk skin cancer referrals, unlocking specialist capacity. The observational design shows strong safety metrics but requires replication in RCTs across diverse settings before widespread adoption.

The study tracked 8391 patients representing 94% of urgent skin cancer pathway referrals over 16 months. After an initial validation phase, the AI analyzed smartphone dermoscopic images and autonomously discharged benign lesions while routing higher-risk cases to teledermatology. This reduced routine follow-up from 27% to 12% and biopsy rates from 43% to 27% versus conventional face-to-face care, saving 2851 clinician hours equivalent to over 8500 additional 20-minute appointments.

⚡ Prediction

NHS England: By end-2027, at least three additional trusts will adopt similar autonomous AI pathways if post-market surveillance confirms sensitivity above 97% in >20,000 patients.
