Streptomyces and Mycobacterium in Classroom Dust Tied to 0.06-0.13 L Spirometry Drops in SINPHONIE Cohort
Observational European school study links two common dust bacteria to small but consistent lung-function reductions in children. Cross-sectional design limits causal claims; longitudinal data with environmental sensors are required. Findings support closer attention to classroom moisture and ventilation practices.
A next logical step is a longitudinal cohort that repeats spirometry and dust sampling over three school years while deploying continuous CO2 and humidity sensors to test whether targeted remediation attenuates the observed decrements. Regulatory bodies could then decide whether bacterial thresholds merit inclusion in school hygiene standards.
Follow-up investigators: Within 36 months a published longitudinal analysis of the same cohort will report whether classrooms with remediation show >0.05 L FEV1 recovery versus controls.
