Spectroscopic Monitoring Reveals Periodic Metal Accretion Scars on Magnetic White Dwarf LHS 2534
MMT spectroscopy of LHS 2534 detects 19.4-hour variability in metal lines matching the photometric period, providing direct evidence for magnetically confined accretion scars on a fourth magnetic white dwarf. The result demonstrates a practical method to expand the known sample and study diffusion versus levitation in these atmospheres.
Researchers obtained multiple epochs of optical spectra covering the 20-hour rotation cycle of the magnetic white dwarf LHS 2534. They measured equivalent-width changes in the sodium and chromium resonance lines and recovered the same periodicity previously seen in Kepler K2 photometry, demonstrating that the metals are not uniformly mixed but remain localized near the magnetic poles. The three previously known systems with metal-enriched polar caps are all strongly magnetic; LHS 2534 now becomes the fourth. Because the accretion flow is guided by the field, the observed line-strength modulation directly traces how planetesimal debris is deposited and how diffusion and radiative levitation compete to redistribute the material. The detection was achieved with modest-aperture time-resolved spectroscopy rather than high-resolution imaging or polarimetry, showing that similar variability searches can be extended to fainter magnetic white dwarfs. A key limitation is the single-object sample and the assumption that the photometric period is purely rotational; multi-wavelength or spectropolarimetric follow-up is required to rule out pulsational contributions. Future wide-field time-domain surveys combined with 4-m-class spectroscopic monitoring should increase the known sample size by an order of magnitude within five years, allowing statistical tests of how field strength and temperature control metal-patch longevity.
Souchet et al.: A second magnetic white dwarf with similar Na I modulation will be confirmed by 2027 using TESS or ZTF photometry plus 4-m spectroscopy, raising the known sample to at least five.
