Rolls-Royce Reliance tie-up targets full IP ownership for 120 kN AMCA engine against Safran DRDO bid

The announcement directly challenges Safran’s earlier proposal to co-develop the same thrust-class engine with DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment. Safran’s offer, already under Cabinet Committee on Security review, includes hot-section turbine architecture and promises Indian engineers lead roles in design. Rolls-Royce’s new structure adds a dedicated gas-turbine industrial complex covering design through sustainment, leveraging Reliance’s manufacturing scale.

India has never produced a frontline fighter engine despite multiple programs; all current indigenous fighters still use imported powerplants. The AMCA Mk-1 will fly on GE F414s, but later variants require sovereign control of the core. Both bids therefore hinge on whether New Delhi obtains design authority rather than licensed production.

Procurement records and prior DRDO statements show repeated failures to indigenize high-pressure turbines and single-crystal blades. The competition now tests which partner will actually embed those capabilities inside Indian facilities rather than retain them offshore.

Next milestones are CCS clearance for the selected partner and signature of a formal co-development contract; both are expected inside 18 months given the AMCA timeline pressure.
