Ruchira Shree assisted at 2023 AIMC Santa Fe camp for Indigenous students

Shree prepared registration materials and supported activities after meeting AIMC recruiter Harini Frederickson at the IEEE ISEC conference. Her mother, Intel principal engineer Shubha Bommalingaiahnapallya, introduced her to IEEE Princeton Central Jersey Section events from childhood. Francis O’Connell served as mentor for two years prior to the placement.

NSF data show Indigenous students hold the lowest STEM degree attainment rates among U.S. demographics. AIMC builds on the 2012 Navajo Nation Math Circles program to counter documented barriers including limited role models and curricula that omit Indigenous mathematical practices such as hogan construction and historical code talking. Shree’s AMC 8 honor roll placement and PACT coursework supplied the technical baseline for her role.

Operationally, the placement links IEEE section volunteer pipelines directly to off-site camps without new infrastructure. Sustained participation requires annual intern recruitment cycles and verified math prerequisites. Follow-on license training for participants remains outside the documented camp scope.

Next steps include Shree’s continued AMC progression and potential repeat AIMC placements in 2024–2025 cycles.
