Review of 29 Studies Shows CBD Lacks Consistent Human Efficacy for Alcohol Use Disorder
A 2026 narrative review concludes that promising rodent findings for CBD in alcohol use disorder have not translated to humans, primarily because of dosing route, formulation, and study design limitations. Rigorous clinical trials using combinations and subgroup analyses are still needed before any therapeutic role can be assessed.
Future work must adopt multi-session dosing, test CBD-THC combinations under FDA IND protocols, and incorporate behavioral phenotyping to identify responders. Until such data exist, CBD cannot be positioned as an adjunct to the three approved AUD medications whose modest effect sizes already limit treatment gains.
VITALIS: No phase-2 RCT of multi-dose CBD plus low-THC will report a statistically significant reduction in heavy drinking days versus placebo by December 2028.
