Volvo Car AB Announces 2500 Job Cuts After 40 Percent China Delivery Drop
Volvo Car AB's China exposure and negative free cash flow have prompted Bank of America to recommend default protection on its longer-dated bonds. Geely ownership supplies a pathway for localized models but does not alter near-term competitive pressure from domestic Chinese electric vehicles or tariff effects in the United States. Liquidity remains above minimum thresholds yet net cash has declined sharply from 2021 peaks.
Volvo Car AB recorded negative free cash flow for three consecutive quarters through September 2026, with China revenues down 40 percent year-to-date and United States revenues down 19 percent. Cash balances fell to levels last seen in 2018 while gross debt remained stable. The company maintains SEK 32 billion in cash against total liquidity of SEK 55 billion but faces sustained pressure from domestic Chinese electric vehicle makers offering lower prices.
Ownership by Zhejiang Geely Holding creates a direct channel for six China-specific models developed jointly with the parent, yet these vehicles will not reach volume until 2027-2028. European battery-electric sales reached 45 percent of regional volume, the only profitable market. Tariffs and removal of United States electrification incentives further compress margins on imported models ahead of planned XC60 localization.
Bank of America moved its recommendation on Volvo Car AB five-year credit default swaps to buy protection, citing spreads that do not reflect balance-sheet deterioration relative to BB-rated peers. The incoming chief executive in 2027 is expected to review production footprint and medium-term capital expenditure plans already targeted for a 30 percent reduction from 2024 levels.
European market share gains in battery-electric vehicles provide short-term offset, yet management stated the next two years in China will remain very tough. Inventory reductions planned for the fourth quarter may support cash flow but risk additional margin compression.
BofA credit desk: Volvo Car AB 5-year CDS will trade above 250 basis points by 30 June 2027.
