VLT/SPHERE Direct Imaging Confirms Betelgeuse Companion at 2-3 Solar Masses

Direct imaging with VLT/SPHERE has established Betelgeuse's companion at 2-3 solar masses, ending a 100-year search. The detection supplies a critical benchmark for binary evolution models of red supergiants. A 2025 follow-up epoch is required to close the case.

Astronomers led by Miguel Montargès at Observatoire de Paris used the SPHERE extreme adaptive optics coronagraph on the Very Large Telescope in December 2024 to capture the clearest image yet of Betelgeuse B. The team processed the data to subtract the supergiant's glare and recovered a point source whose position and brightness match predictions from 2024 orbital models. This constitutes the first unambiguous direct detection, elevating earlier Gemini North hints to confirmed status.

The companion's higher-than-expected mass revises prior assumptions about the system's dynamics and may influence Betelgeuse's mass-loss history and final core evolution. Such binaries can alter supernova progenitors by stripping envelopes or triggering common-envelope phases, directly affecting nucleosynthetic yields that reach future generations of stars and planets.

Confirmation now requires a second epoch observation in late 2025 when the companion should appear on the opposite side of Betelgeuse at the predicted separation. Failure to recover it at that location would reopen the possibility of a background contaminant or data artifact.

The result demonstrates that planet-hunting instrumentation can also resolve faint stellar companions around evolved massive stars, expanding the toolkit for characterizing pre-supernova systems.
