California's Coordinated Retail Theft Operation Nets 97 Arrests, $1M+ in Recovered Goods Amid Ongoing Statewide Push

A nine-day enforcement blitz in early August 2026, part of the National Organized Retail Crime Blitz, resulted in 97 arrests—including eight on felony charges—and the recovery of more than 8,500 stolen items valued at approximately $1.05 million across California. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) led the effort, collaborating with over 100 law enforcement agencies to target theft at retailers, shopping centers, and businesses statewide. Operations in areas like San Diego (notably sneakers), Roseville, Lodi, and Stockton yielded additional arrests and seizures.

This operation aligns with the CHP's Organized Retail Crime Task Force, active since 2019, which has conducted over 4,700 investigations and more than 5,300 arrests, recovering 1.6 million items worth over $76 million. Broader statewide data since October 2023 shows over 32,000 arrests and nearly $260 million in recovered goods from coordinated efforts. CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee emphasized the operation's role in mitigating impacts on businesses and communities, with plans for continued resource allocation.

The blitz underscores persistent challenges with organized retail crime, even as property crime rates have declined in some metrics. Connections to prior national blitzes, such as the May 2025 operation, highlight a pattern of multi-agency responses supported by legislative extensions like Assembly Bill 331 for regional task forces.
