Portland Record Store Arson Attempt Highlights Small Business Vulnerabilities and Mental Health Crisis

A 40-year-old Portland man, Adrian Orange, faces charges including attempted arson after allegedly trying to set fire to Vinyl Resting Place in the St. Johns neighborhood on August 27. According to court documents reported by KATU and KOIN, Orange confronted the owner after the store declined to purchase his records, threatened to kill him by calling him a 'dead man,' then returned to shove newspaper under the locked door, pour lighter fluid, and ignite it. A neighboring business employee extinguished the flames after he left and was also threatened. Orange allegedly returned 15 minutes later, kicking the door and yelling threats like 'One way or another, I’m getting to you.' He was arrested nearby with a lighter in his possession and arraigned on charges of attempted arson, burglary counts, coercion, and menacing, held without bail. The store owner later posted on social media about frustration with the mental health crisis. This incident echoes earlier challenges at the same store, including repeated burglaries in 2024 that left owner Steve Cook feeling the business's future was uncertain amid Portland's crime issues. Reports also note the owner was on hold with 911 for about 15 minutes during the event, underscoring emergency response strains.
