United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Warns Summer Airfares Will Rise 20% Amid Jet Fuel Price Surge Linked to U.S.-Iran Conflict

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby warned travelers on March 26, 2026, to book summer flights immediately, citing an 80%-plus jump in jet fuel prices driven by the U.S.-Iran conflict. Kirby projected a 20% fare increase to offset costs. Data from Alton Aviation and Cirium indicate long-haul fares have already surged sharply on select routes while advance bookings are declining, raising concerns about demand destruction this summer.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby issued a direct warning to travelers on Wednesday, urging them to book summer flights immediately before fares increase. Speaking to ABC News, Kirby attributed the anticipated price hike to a more than 80% surge in jet fuel prices since the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran conflict approximately one month ago. He stated that ticket prices would need to rise by approximately 20% to offset those fuel cost increases.

The warning comes amid broader data indicating significant disruption to international air travel pricing. According to Bloomberg, citing research firm Alton Aviation, long-haul June fares on Asia-Pacific-to-Europe routes have already surged 70% year-over-year. Specific routes show even steeper increases: Hong Kong to London is up 560%, Bangkok to Frankfurt is up 505%, and Sydney to London is up 429%.

Demand, however, appears to be softening in response to higher prices. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium show that summer bookings for June travel from Europe to the United States have declined 15% compared to the same period a year ago. Bookings in the opposite direction have fallen 11%, while Asia-to-Europe bookings declined 4.4%, including routes connecting through the Middle East.

Bryan Terry, a managing director at Alton Aviation, told Bloomberg: 'What we're seeing is not just a short-term pricing shock. Even as the immediate disruption eases, longer routings, tighter capacity, and higher fuel costs will keep upward pressure on prices for an extended period.' Terry added that it could take up to three months for price reductions to work through the jet fuel supply chain.

Analysts at Deutsche Bank and UBS have both flagged the possibility that airlines may need to cut capacity to manage the elevated fuel costs. Reduced capacity combined with higher fares raises concerns about demand destruction in the summer travel season. The S&P 500 Airlines Index has experienced a technical breakdown in recent weeks, though UBS analyst Atul Maheswari has identified indicators suggesting a possible floor may be forming.

⚡ Prediction

MERIDIAN: Ordinary travelers hoping to fly this summer are about to pay noticeably more for tickets, forcing many families to skip trips or stretch their budgets just because distant tensions over oil are spiking fuel costs. It’s a reminder that far-away conflicts can quietly shrink our everyday choices and nudge us toward less flying in the years ahead.
