Bugatti CEO Rimac's Chiron Taken from Zagreb Site, Tracked to Austrian Recovery

Rimac's Chiron was stolen from the Zagreb factory due to visible keys and recovered in Austria via real-time tracking. The case illustrates the limits of informal security assumptions at luxury manufacturing sites and the effectiveness of existing cross-border police data sharing.

The theft occurred when an unauthorized individual entered the Rimac campus, entered the vehicle, and departed. Company staff initially assumed authorized use. Rimac activated the car's tracking, notified Croatian police, and pursued in his Porsche 911. The vehicle stopped for fuel in Slovenia before crossing into Austria, where local authorities detained the driver at a petrol station.

Security footage released by Rimac shows the hooded individual approaching and entering the car. The 36-year-old Croatian national was arrested after the tracking data was shared across borders. Austrian police confirmed the recovery shortly after 7 p.m. Rimac later met the suspect at the station; the man stated he had sought employment but took the car when keys were visible.

The incident exposes the gap between Rimac's stated assumption of low crime risk in Croatia and actual perimeter access at a high-value manufacturing site. Cross-border tracking and rapid police coordination between Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria enabled recovery with only minor damage. No state policy shift is documented; the event remains a single-instance corporate security failure.

Rimac indicated the tracking system will remain active on remaining vehicles and that keys will no longer be left inside. Austrian authorities stated they will proceed with prosecution given the vehicle's value regardless of the owner's preference.
