Vortex generators on bileaflet valves cut turbulent shear by 18 percent in simulations
Preprint modeling shows passive vortex generators on mechanical valve leaflets can improve flow patterns and lower thrombosis risk markers. Evidence remains limited to in-silico data; animal or bench validation is required before any clinical claim.
The authors ran high-resolution hemodynamic simulations of a 29 mm St. Jude-like bileaflet valve at 70 bpm cardiac output. They tested co-rotating and counter-rotating rectangular vortex generators placed at 23 degrees incidence on the leaflet surfaces. Dynamic mode decomposition extracted coherent structures showing that properly located generators suppress large-scale vortices in the wake, reducing turbulent kinetic energy and blood damage index compared with the unmodified valve.
