US Equity Net Supply to Rise Most Since 2000 as $2.3 Trillion in Lockups and Issuance Hit 2027
Jones forecasts sustained short pressure from record equity supply in 2027 while Goldman maintains demand will offset it. Fed flow data and issuance records show the supply surge is real; the outcome hinges on whether household and foreign buying persists at prior rates.
Paul Tudor Jones appeared on CNBC Squawk Box and declared he would remain short equities for the full year of 2027. He cited an inflection point where corporate buybacks and M&A, which supported the prior four-year advance, face reversal. Jones pointed to the 1998-2002 period when successive unlocks added persistent supply. Goldman Sachs strategist Ben Snider reached similar supply totals in a client note but concluded household and foreign demand above $1 trillion in H1 2026 would absorb the flow without derailing the bull market.
Federal Reserve flow data and Goldman issuance tallies show corporates have already raised $431 billion year-to-date in 2026 through IPOs, follow-ons, converts, and SPACs, up 98 percent from the prior year. When scaled to market capitalization the figures remain near historical averages, yet the absolute dollar volume approaches the 2021 peak of $540 billion. Snider projects $1.7 trillion in buybacks next year, but notes that further rate increases would raise debt-financing costs and slow repurchase activity.
The analysis understates two structural shifts. First, median S&P 500 constituents already trade 16 percent below their 52-week highs, indicating narrower leadership than index levels suggest. Second, sustained foreign inflows depend on stable US rates and earnings growth; any deviation in either variable reduces absorption capacity. Primary records from Fed Z.1 releases and SEC lockup schedules confirm the supply numbers while leaving demand elasticity untested at these volumes.
Corporate equity demand is projected to exceed $2 trillion when cash acquisitions are included, yet this assumes continued access to cheap financing. If interest rates remain elevated, the net supply figure could exceed Goldman estimates and pressure valuations beyond current breadth deterioration.
Paul Tudor Jones: S&P 500 posts negative total return for calendar year 2027.
