Anchorage Teachers Report Heightened Student Hunger and Distraction After 2022 End of Universal Free School Meals
A small qualitative study captured teacher perceptions of worsening hunger and focus after universal school meals ended in Anchorage. The evidence is limited to subjective reports yet consistent with prior quantitative work linking free meal access to better participation and behavior. Larger mixed-methods evaluations are required before generalizing impacts.
Policy reversal concentrated new administrative burdens on teachers, who described increased time spent on payment logistics and informal feeding. This echoes patterns seen after other targeted safety-net rollbacks where frontline staff absorb uncompensated labor. Future research needs longitudinal designs that pair teacher reports with administrative meal data, parent surveys, and objective indicators of diet quality and academic performance across multiple states.
NYU Steinhardt researchers: Statewide meal participation in Alaska will remain at least 8 percentage points below 2021-2022 levels through the 2027 school year.
