Republican Lawmakers Publicly Break With Trump Over Iran War Escalation, Citing Classified Briefing Discrepancies

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace and a growing number of GOP lawmakers are publicly opposing potential U.S. ground operations in Iran following a classified Pentagon briefing they say produced more questions than answers. Mace walked out of the briefing citing being 'misled,' pledged to vote against war funding if troops are deployed, and said she would likely support a Democratic War Powers resolution constraining the administration. The Pentagon has requested $200 billion in supplemental war funding while approximately 7,000 U.S. troops are reportedly headed to the region.

WASHINGTON — A growing faction of Republican lawmakers is openly challenging the Trump administration's military operations against Iran, with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) emerging as a leading dissenting voice after walking out of a classified Pentagon briefing on Wednesday.

Mace told reporters outside the Capitol that she would vote against war funding if American ground troops are deployed in Iran. 'I'll be voting against the funding if we're putting troops on the ground. I'm not going to fund that,' Mace said, according to video circulated on social media by journalist Acyn on March 24, 2026. She subsequently posted on X: 'If a single boot of a single American soldier sets foot on Iranian soil, I will vote against this.'

The discontent intensified following a classified briefing of the House Armed Services Committee, from which Mace departed early, stating 'we were misled.' An anonymous lawmaker present at the briefing told the Daily Mail that members were presented with three military objectives — seizing Kharg Island, Iran's primary oil export hub; targeting its nuclear material; and pursuing regime change — a set of goals that diverges markedly from the four publicly stated White House objectives of destroying Iran's missiles, navy, armed proxies, and nuclear capabilities. The lawmaker described the answers received as 'jaw-dropping.'

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL) also expressed frustration after the briefing, telling reporters: 'We want to know more about what's going on. We're just not getting enough answers.' Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-MS) told Politico he understood Rogers' reaction.

The Pentagon has submitted a $200 billion supplemental funding request for the conflict. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has defended the request, stating it 'takes money to kill the bad guys.' The administration had initially characterized the military operation as lasting days or weeks. Approximately 7,000 U.S. ground forces, including elements of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and Marines, are reportedly en route to the Middle East.

According to Axios, Mace said she would 'most likely' support a House Democratic War Powers resolution to constrain presidential war-making authority against Iran should it come to a vote again, a measure that would be largely symbolic given the president's veto power.

Beyond Mace, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) told reporters: 'I am so tired of spending money elsewhere. I'm tired of the Industrial War Complex getting our hard-earned tax dollars.' Sens. Rand Paul and Thomas Massie, traditionally skeptical of military interventions, have also voiced opposition. Senator Ted Cruz acknowledged in a recorded interview that 'where we are right now is a challenging position for Republicans' politically.

⚡ Prediction

MERIDIAN: This Republican split could slow down any rush into another Middle East war, sparing regular families from sky-high gas prices, bigger tax bills, and the worry of more young Americans getting sent into combat. For the future it suggests Congress might finally start reining in endless military spending, making big foreign adventures harder to launch without real debate.
